Managed IT Services vs In-House IT: What Suits a UAE Business?

23 October 2026 · By Tech1UAE

Every growing business in the UAE reaches the point where IT can no longer be handled by “whoever is good with computers”. The usual choice is between hiring an in-house IT person and outsourcing to a managed IT services provider. Both can work. The right answer depends on your size, how complex your systems are and how much risk you can tolerate.

What an in-house IT person gives you

A dedicated employee knows your people and systems, is physically in the office and can prioritise your issues without a queue. For larger organisations with specialist systems, that day-to-day presence is valuable.

The limits show up quickly in a smaller business. One person cannot be an expert in networking, cybersecurity, Microsoft 365, backups, phones and hardware at the same time. They need holidays, they get sick, and when they leave, much of the knowledge about your setup can leave with them. On top of salary, a UAE hire also brings visa, medical insurance, end-of-service gratuity and the cost of the tools they need to do the job properly.

What a managed IT provider gives you

A managed IT services provider supplies a whole team for a predictable monthly fee. You get a helpdesk for everyday problems, engineers for on-site work, and specialists for security, cloud and networking when you need them. Good providers monitor and patch your systems proactively, so many problems are fixed before staff notice them.

The trade-offs are that the provider is not sitting in your office all day, and service quality varies a lot between providers. That is why the questions you ask before signing matter. Our guide on how to choose an IT support company in Dubai covers them.

A simple way to decide

  • Under about 50 staff: managed IT is usually the most cost-effective option, because you get a full team for less than the cost of one employee.
  • 50 to 200 staff: many businesses use co-managed IT. An internal IT coordinator handles day-to-day requests and the provider supplies monitoring, security, projects and holiday cover.
  • Specialist or regulated systems: an in-house lead backed by a provider for depth and out-of-hours cover is often the safest model.

Questions to ask yourself

  • What happens today if your IT person is on leave and the email stops working?
  • Who is responsible for patching, backups and security, and how do you know it is being done?
  • Is your IT documented well enough that someone else could take over tomorrow?
  • Do you need someone on site every day, or would fast remote support plus planned visits do?

Co-managed IT: the middle ground

Co-managed IT is increasingly popular in the UAE. Your internal person stays the familiar face for staff, while the provider supplies the tools, monitoring, security expertise and extra hands for projects such as office moves or Microsoft 365 migrations. It removes the single point of failure without replacing anyone.
